As a sequel to the IPC, a Code of Criminal Procedure was enacted in 1861 and established the rules to be followed in all stages of investigation, trial and sentencing. (Rao, 1991). This code was repealed and a new Code came into effect in 1974.
The study of sentencing for criminal convictions has long been under review for the overall effectiveness, deterrence, and overall implementation of fair justice.
