This can be accomplished only when we instill in the children adeep feeling of commitment to values that would build this country and bring back to the dprogress.A person with proper values will not be afraid to face problems. He or she will expect and acceptthem as part of life. He or she will not give un necessary importance to anything that happens inlife. He or she will have complete faith in God. Value shapes our relationships, our behaviours, our choices, and our sense of who we are. Themore positive our values, the most positive our actions. This is one of the reasons why valueeducation is being taught or included in all type of education, because it plays a great role forstudent’s becoming successful in their own choice of careers.Values in education are like what virtues make of a human being. Value education harmonizesthe need for the student to achieve in a competitive world and the need to be compassion to hisfellow beings. While society today faces many pressures and pulls of modern day advancementeducation with its competitive marking system is creating a market oriented society. Children arebeing groomed to be professionals to capture the top salary jobs in the market. All the samewhile it is necessary to teach the child to fish instead of giving him a fish it is values that make aman. The definition of value education is educating the child to harmonize every aspect of his beingviz. spiritual, physical, emotional, intellectual and psychological so as to develop his personalityin a holistic manner.Meaning of value-based education: Education is the vehicle of knowledge, self-preservationand success. Education not only gives a platform to succeed, but also the knowledge of socialconduct, strength, character and self-respect. The greatest gift education gives us is theknowledge of unconditional love and a set of values. These values include the simple difference between right and wrong, a belief in God, theimportance of hard work and self-respect. Education is a continuous learning experience, learning from people, learning from leaders and followers and then growing up to be the personwe are meant to be.Value- based education is a threefold development of any individual of any gender and age, butmost importantly of a child. Education tries to develop three aspects: physique, mentality andcharacter. Even though physique and mentality are important, they are menaces without the thirdbecause character is the greatest of these. Education plays a huge role in precisely this area.Education India Journal: A Quarterly Refereed Journal of Dialogues on Education, ISSN 22782435, Vol. 1, Issue- 3, August 2012
Value-based education is a tool which not only provides us a profession which we can pursue butalso a purpose in life. The purpose of our life is undoubtedly to know oneself and be ourselves. We cannot do it unless we learn to identify ourselves with all that lives. The objective ofeducation in a country like India, which has a glorious heritage and can boast of diversity ingeography, culture, values and beliefs very rarely seen in this wide world, should be to educate astudent of the value system which is indispensable to live successful life (Das, Sayan, 2008).Role of value education in contemporary society: Every Country develops its own system ofeducation to express and promote its unique Socio-Cultural identity and also to meet thechallenges of the times. Although the country has made rapid progress in various areas likescientific technology, economic infrastructure etc. but its value system has been declined. Therefore, Education in general and value education in particular occupies a prestigious place inmodern context of contemporary society. The problem of value education of the young hasassumed increasing prominence in educational discussion during recent times. Parents, teachersand society at large are concerned about values and value education of children. We arewitnessing tremendous value crisis throughout the world today. A lackadaisical attitude towardsvalue and its institutions is pervasive in the world today. The reappearance of barbaric qualitiesof selfishness, clashes and conflagration give clear indication of the process of degeneration ofhuman society. There is an urgent need for a great effort to revive and reform the values ion.Values are goals set for achievements and they motivate, define and color all our activitiescognitive, affective and conative. They are described as the socially defined desires and goalsthat are internalized through the process of conditioning, learning & socialization. The presenteducation needs moral, spiritual and aesthetic values also to be included in it. The culture andtraditions can be preserved & transferred to the next generation by the help of value educationonly. Value education is much concerned with striving for personal wholeness as well asgenerating a responsible attitude towards others and an understanding of wrong and rightbehavior. The most constructive factor in value education is its purpose which encourages thechild to explore the powers while offering living guidance and setting appropriate limits tobehavior.
