GE HealthcareUniversal ViewerProduct Data Sheet Helping enhance access and productivityIntroductionWith Universal Viewer for Centricity PACS and PACS-IW,GE Healthcare delivers a powerful unified workspacefor radiologists and other clinicians. Universal Viewerbrings together intelligent tools, enhanced usability andaccess, advanced visualization and breast imaging tohelp optimize productivity.Unlike disparate PACS and 3D systems, Universal Viewerhelps to increase efficiency by simplifying informationaccess with a single image repository across 2D and 3Dstudies, enabling holistic oncology and other specialtywork flows, with easy access to prior exams.Universal Viewer is designed to work with CentricityPACS and Centricity PACS-IW and is available forinstallation in a virtual environment to help organizationsoptimize the use of their current data center space.imagination at workOver 3,000 organizations trust Centricity ImagingSolutions because GE Healthcare delivers high-qualityservice, reliability, and technology innovation, whichallow providers to help reduce the cost of ownershiptoday while preparing for the challenges of the future.

Helping Improve Productivity with Intelligent Productivity ToolsSmart Reading Protocols1A standard feature of Universal Viewer, Smart Reading Protocols (SRP) representsa new way for radiologists to work with hanging protocols.Designed to help improve image setup efficiency in contrast to traditionalhanging protocol functions available with PACS software, SRP makes hangingprotocol creation simple with drag and drop tools. During the normal reviewprocess, radiologists can set up images based on their preferences and “teach”the system using a one-click learning feature. The next time the radiologistopens an exam of a similar type, SRP automatically applies the previouslearnings to “hang” the image to their preference.Using a set of machine-learning algorithms that track the way a user or a groupof users set up images for reading, SRP makes inferences and hangingrecommendations based on preferences that it learns from the users. All dataassociated with an exam is evaluated by the SRP engine, not just informationin the DICOM header. SRP uses data that is both coded and in free text to helpto expand the potential accuracy and specificity of protocol selection.Smart Reading Protocols are able to learn the user’s preference for MIP/MPRand embedded 3D applications, helping to further increase productivity. The user’spreferred MIP/MPR and 3D application preferences automatically launch as partof their learned hanging protocol.SRP supports learning of MIP/MPR and embedded advanced visualization withinthe viewports if they are included as part of a hanging protocol for a viewport. While most radiologists prefer exams be presented with their own hangingprotocols, there may be a time when the user’s SRP is not satisfactory, e.g.,reviewing an exam outside of their specialty or a non-routine case. In thesesituations, the user can launch the SRP Quick Search utility to search for an SRPthat best fits the open exam, regardless of who created it, or search for an SRPby a specialist’s name and apply it. If the user is pleased with the SRP Quick searchresult, they may “Learn” it as is or with edits, to make the SRP their own.To support today’s mobile radiologist, the user can utilize his or her preferredSRP on any workstation as long as the number of monitors and the orientationof the monitors match between the workstations. This allows the user to nothave to retrain the system their preferred protocols in every location where workis performed.SRP were developed in conjunction with GE’s Global Research center.

Adaptive Streaming EngineThe adaptive streaming engine helps generate rapid image displayby enabling adjustments for bandwidth and device compute powerto provide the most efficient way to deliver images. The adaptive streaming engine evaluates the format in which imagesare stored (uncompressed, compressed in JPEG, JPEG2000, or RLE formats)as well as the network conditions between the data store and the viewer –to deliver images to the user’s screen in the most efficient manner.Transmissions of patient and study information use SSL encryption.Enhanced Usability and AccessUniversal Viewer’s web-client provides radiologists, referring physicians, and other clinicians access to the system from any location2.The study list serves as the hub of the workflows and is browser accessible, providing fast access to vital study and patient information, including orderdata, notes, and reports.By selecting a study from the study list, the viewer is launched for studyviewing. Utilizing the re-architected adaptive streaming engine, the firstimage is displayed to the user within two (2) seconds.3 From that pointforward, a user can freely navigate the study content with the vieweradaptively, helping provide rapid delivery of the currently viewed imagein the best available quality. The Auto-Fetch option improves the images display time by allowing thepre-loading of studies from storage. This is defined within the study list.Universal Viewer can access historical studies directly from the archiveif studies are not readily available in the local data store. With the web-based viewer, organizations can provide referring physiciansand clinicians direct access2 to their PACS systems or provide access withtight connectivity through an EMR or physician portal. All referrers can have the same advanced post-processing capabilitiesas the radiologist, including the ability to consult large datasets from theirpractice desk. This helps enhance turn-around time to diagnosis. UniversalViewer additionally offers security and preference settings to define whatexternal users can do, helping to enhance the security of patient data.Universal Viewer’s web-based architecture enables easy administrationfrom virtually anywhere.2Universal Viewer’s scalable, flexible architecture provides tight connectivitywith Centricity Clinical Archive4 solution and various RIS and EMR systemsfor one-click access to images.

Workflow to Support Your NeedsUniversal Viewer’s web-client has the benefit of allowing radiologists andradiology departments to adapt to their current workflow, using eitherthe Universal Viewer study list or the RIS system to drive workflow. WhenGE’s Centricity RIS-IC5 is in use, the same user interface is implementedthroughout, helping to support improved productivity.Using the Open Desktop Integration tools, Universal Viewer can be usedas the viewer for other 3rd party RIS systems, including those availablewithin an Electronic Medical Record.Advanced Tools in a Single SolutionAdvanced VisualizationPowered by AdvantageWorkstation (AW)Universal Viewer providesan enhanced user experiencefor advanced visualization. It offers a single sourcefor post-processingapplications for MIP/MPR,PET-CT, vessel analysis, automated bone removal, integrated registration, andoncology quantification. This decreases the need to log in to multiple applications and retrieve imagesfor comparison from stand-alone “mini PACS” systems, allowing radiologiststo read exams more efficiently. This also helps increase IT productivity byreducing requests for DICOM resends and image moves between systems. The embedded advanced visualization applications powered by AW arecombined with the system’s hanging protocols to help reduce manualper-exam setup. Preprocessed images are displayed on the monitoraccording to the radiologist’s preset specifications, helping to decreaseset-up time and helping to support rapid reading. Please refer to the individual product datasheets for more detail on thecapabilities of each of the applications powered by AW.

Optional Client-side Integrationwith Advantage WorkstationServer6Expanded connectivity options for AW Server and AW clinical applicationshelp to improve efficiency while helping to enhance patient care. The ability to use AW Server and advanced visualization applications thatdo not use the embedded work flow in Universal Viewer is available throughclient-side integration. This provides organizations with the ability to use AWServer (AWS) versions 2.10 or higher and the clinical applications supportedby those platforms. Two modes of integration are available: hybrid and fullintegration.Hybrid integration: In the hybrid integration model, AWS and the advancedclinical applications access images directly from the AW Server storage.Post-processed images can automatically or manually be pushed to thePACS system for later access by other radiologists and clinicians.Users log into the PACS. User and patient information is passed to AWSso the user does not have to execute a separate login and does not haveto search for the patient in context on the PACS.Full integration: The ability to use AW Server in full integration modeis also available. With this model, images are pushed from the modalityto the PACS system. The advanced applications access the imagesfrom the PACS system and all post-processed images are automaticallypushed back to the PACS system for later access by other radiologistsand clinicians.Users log into the PACS. User and patient information is passed to AWSso the user does not have to execute a separate log in and does not haveto search for the patient in context on the PACS. Up to four instancesof 3D advanced applications can be opened. Each will retain patientcontext within Universal Viewer. Please note that full integration is available with Centricity PACS installationsonly. Multi-frame studies and NM modality images are not supported withthis integration.A comparison of embedded, hybrid and full integration – is provided in thechart on the next page.Flexibility to meet your needsOrganizations can take advantage of both the embedded advancedvisualization applications and the larger suite of advanced applicationsoffered by AW Server through client-side integration. Known as mixed modeand available for customers using Centricity PACS, each user’s profile can beset up to direct the user to the preferred set applications. Radiologists forwhom the embedded applications meet the needs of their daily practicewill have a profile set up to that points them to the embedded applications. For radiologists who need additional advanced applications, user profilesare set to use the suite of applications provided by AW Server that are notembedded within Universal Viewer.

Advanced MammographyUniversal Viewer provides access to an advanced mammography workflowapplication, which supports screening and diagnostic work flows and displayof multimodality images on the same solution. This allows mammographersand radiologists to access patient history and relevant comparisons. The mammography workflow application provides support for the newestIHE profiles for mammography images. This helps reduce the need to readimages on separate workstation solutions.Support for reading tomosynthesis and CESM images is also available, helping reduce the need to maintain separate, stand-alone workstationsand separate databases.Additional Advanced Applications To address the needs of radiologists and specialists in nuclear medicineand ultrasound technology, Universal Viewer provides tight connectivitywith GE Healthcare’s Xeleris and ViewPoint applications using the opendesktop integration tools. For more information on these applications, please refer to the individualproduct datasheets.Enterprise-wide Access2Cross Enterprise DisplayIn today’s complex healthcare environment, patients often seek care atmultiple points of service. This may result in a patient’s imaging data beingstored in different DICOM sources, possibly with different patient identifiers.Cross Enterprise Display provides radiologists access to the patient’shistorical imaging data for comparison across affiliated sites which havesite to site or site to data center.Comparison images are not copied to the local PACS system for display butrather streamed directly from the source to the client, alleviating themovement of studies and the challenges of synchronization. Information onthe availability of comparison studies is displayed in the patient time line.Image comparison tools such as cross referencing, linking, registration andmeasurement can be utilized on the remote comparison in a read only mode. This provides radiologists with access to more data while reading this exam.It also has the potential to reduce the number of unnecessary imaging studies.

Cross Enterprise Display supports multi-MRN or multi-domain environmentsby using a IHE PIX or MPI solution that is provided by the customer. Retrievalof reports is supported when reports are stored as DICOM SR format in theCentricity Enterprise Archive at the remote site.Universal Viewer ZFP Universal Viewer provides enterprise and community-wide access.by providing a choice of web-based and Zero Footprint (ZFP) clientconfigurations. The web-client is designed to provide diagnostic capabilitiesto radiologists and display in multiple, user-defined monitor configurations, supporting up to six (6) monitors. The ZFP client delivers clinicians access to images and reports andis a true HTML5 application that requires zero installation, with no downloadof any software and zero administrative rights required on the end user’sdevice. A PC, Mac, or an iPad can be used with a variety of browsers7,. 8Summary of BenefitsUniversal Viewer optimizes radiologist workflow efficiency through the useof advanced study layouts, multiple presentation states, intelligent hangingprotocols with variable-sized, asymmetrical windows and “copies” ofwindows, 2D stack-based reading tools, and 3D reconstructions.Within a few mouse clicks, a referrer accesses the same software and clinicaltools as radiologists. A dedicated referrer role provides important resultsat a glance: report and diagnosis, key images, and scanned documents,as well as access to the patient study and set of viewing tools. The overall user interface is highly customizable to meet explicit needsand preferences of the users.Volume-Based LicensingOur volume-based license model does not differentiate between theradiologist, radiographer, clinician, or referring physician. All users haveaccess to the same user interface, tool set, and databases, with specificfunctions and privileges granted for each user or group of users. Withvolume-based licensing, wherever users log into the system, either via WANor LAN, they will have access to their personalized toolbars and the hangingprotocols that are tied to their User ID.
