PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL PERÚPRESIDENT’SWELCOME WORDSThe Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP, by its Spanish acronym)defines itself as a plural and tolerant academic community, based on ethical, democratic and Catholic principles. Our essential foundations are based onacademic rigor, a plurality of scientific and humanistic perspectives, Catholicvalues and ethical principles, a culture of discrepancy and tolerance, and acommitment with the development of Peru and its people.Consequently, our model seeks to serve the country and the world throughour students’ comprehensive training, the development of knowledge andour commitment with society.Hence, PUCP offers a humanistic, scientific and moral education. This stress onimparting comprehensive and civic education to our students is part of our university’s tradition. Therefore, we look for our students to entirely grow their intellectual, critical, reflective, artistic, spiritual and physical capacities. As a result, in 2014 the Instituto Internacional para el Aseguramientode la Calidad (IAC, by its Spanish acronym) recognized our institutionaland academic standards and, after a long process that began in 2008,awarded us with a five year-long International Accreditation in categoriesof Institutional Management and Undergraduate Studies, and Research andGraduate Teaching. This recognition consolidates the purpose of the President’s team: tobecome a distinguished University, with international standards andcommitted with our country, that is recognized as the main multidisciplinarycenter for scientific, humanistic and innovation due to its important academicleadership, due to its defense of democracy and human rights, and forencouraging a responsible relationship with the environment. All of thesecharacteristics, in accordance with the Christian values that inspire us.This purpose will only be attainable with a collaborative work amongstudents, professors, employees and alumni. We all should work togetherto maintain firmly the university model that we have built: a space wherereason merges faith in a constructive manner, and serves Christian andCatholic values, human development and development in our country.Dr. Marcial Rubio CorreaPresident of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú7

PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL PERÚ2. GRADUATE PROGRAMSIn today’s competitive world, it is imperative to continue with universityeducation beyond the completion of undergraduate studies. A professional,a scholar or a researcher need to broaden their knowledge and complementtheir education through graduate programs, or training, coaching, updatingand extension plans, whether in local, national or international areas. Thissituation acquires greater significance due to the fast transformation ofsocial and economic structures particularly, because of the increasingaccumulation of information experienced over the past years, as a resultof the development of new information and communication technologies, which demand constant updating and training.Taking this situation into account, and with the clear premise thateducation is a process that carries on in different stages of life, thePontificia Universidad Católica del Perú has offered graduate studiesprograms since 1972, when the Academic Program for Advanced Studiesopened. In 1984, this program took its current name, Graduate School ofPUCP. With the experience achieved over four decades of uninterruptedwork, in addition to the programs offered at CENTRUM Católica —PUCPBusiness Center and one of the most prestigious institutions on this fieldin Latin America— our university currently offers a wide range of diplomas,82 Master’s Degrees and 13 Doctoral Degrees. Each of them has beendesigned to train and offer our students new understanding capacities, which will contribute to our society in different fields of knowledge. Our Graduate School offers several specialization programs in differentfields that go from sciences and arts, to technology and liberal arts; andhas also implemented a quality system to guarantee the excellence of itsgraduate programs. In addition, PUCP has over a thousand professors, allof which hold doctoral and master’s degrees from the most prestigiousnational and international universities, and are scholars and professionalswith a vast research trajectory. Furthermore, PUCP has signed over 120agreements with other educational institutions around the world. Amongthem, 14 graduate cooperative programs with universities from Europe, and North and Latin America offer our students the possibility to obtaindouble accreditations. It is important to mention that, in order to promote high-standards ingraduate programs, PUCP offers important financial aid programs andfellowships, such as the Aristotle Fellowship for notable master students;the Huiracocha Fellowship, which allows doctoral students to become fulltime researchers; the Galileo Fund for master thesis projects; and the Marco Polo Fund to finance academic mobility for graduate students.13

CONTINUING EDUCATIONA top priority for the Pontificia Universidad Católica delPerú is that its educational offer, as well as its relationshipwith its environs, has to be decisively engaged withoffering courses and training, and updating and extensionprograms, at the local, national and international levels. Inthat spirit, in addition to the academic offer of the GraduateSchool and CENTRUM Católica, different academicdepartments in our university offer several programs, suchas diplomas, specialization courses, and seminars, amongother alternatives. The Center of Continuing EducationPUCP also offers some possibilities, in line with its goalto promote, organize and develop academic activities intraining, updating, specializing and improving differentfields of scientific and technological knowledge.Proof of that are the programs designed for elder people, such as Aula Libre (Free Class), which allows students toenroll in senior classes from all undergraduate academicprograms; the Universidad de la Experiencia (ExperienceUniversity - UNEX), an extension program with a specialcurricula for senior adults; and the Plan Adulto (Adult Plan),for students over 30 to pursue a university career. In addition, the PUCP offers programs that do not only focuson professional education. The programs offered by theCultural Center and the Center for Oriental Studies (musical, literary and film appreciation, personal development andvital planning) are oriented to get acquainted and betterunderstanding of different cultures. In 2013, the PUCPorganized 2,012 continuing education activities for a totalof 70,496 students.More informationWeb site: http://www.pucp.edu.pe/formacion-continua/15
PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL PERÚ4. E-LEARNINGFor the PUCP, e-learning is a strategic line in its developmentbecause it allows it to bring its educational model to themost remote areas of Peru. In 2014, our institution offered153 e-learning projects (courses, diplomas, programs andmasters) for 7,225 students.Through this teaching method, our principles, values andknowledge are spread.16The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú has over fifteenyears of experience developing e-learning courses, thanksto the initiative of the School of Education and the Centerfor Research and Educational Services (CISE), which madeour institution a pioneer in this teaching method. Followingthis initiative, in 2001 the PUCP launched the Special RemoteEducation Project, which started a stage that inserted ourinstitution in the use of last-generation technology tools, didactic, interactive and ludic strategies from e-learning,and last technology advances from the web 2.0; and ledto the establishment of PUCP Virtual on November 2003,and Campus Virtual PUCP, designed by our Department ofInformation Technology (DIRINFO).In 2008, the PUCP created the Department for OnlineEducation to achieve the “virtualization” of the university’sacademic programs (its internal training programs, offeredaccordingly the regulation, updating and training of thestaff, among others); and to design, develop and implementsolutions by training online companies and public institutions. The Department for Online Education, DIRINFO and theDepartment of Academic Information Technology havegenerated a new institutional trend that uses in an intelligent, responsible, efficient and, most of all, cutting edge toolsto increase and diversify the ways in which the PUCP leadshighly qualified professionals, who are responsible for andcommitted to the development of the country.5. INTERNATIONALACCREDITATIONIn 2014, the Instituto Internacional para el Aseguramiento dela Calidad (IAC) accredited PUCP for five years in the fieldsof Institutional Management and Undergraduate Studies,Research and, for the first time in Peru, Graduate Teaching. At present, the University is being evaluated to maintain thisaccreditation. This achievement was the result of a long process that involveda period of self-assessment to identify our strengths andweaknesses, which involved all our community, and endedwith the evaluation of the IAC experts, who verified our results. This important achievement will allow us to maintain a culture of evaluation, responsibility and accountability; promotethe internationalization of our faculty, students and professionals; give institutional support to undergraduate andgraduate programs; and enable a better use of institutional resources, identifying the strengths and the aspects thatneed to be improved.Accreditation is a step to become a university of internationalcompetence and standards.

PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DEL PERÚRESEARCHIn 98 years of existence as a University, new challenges have emergedsystematically, which are hand in hand with the demands of today’scomplex world. As a teaching institution, the PUCP decided to face themand has set as a goal to reinforce research, a fundamental achievementwithin university activities, in order to create knowledge, technologydevelopment and thus solve scientific problems or questions.Consequently, in 2009 the PUCP University Assembly created the Researchvice-president’s Office. This office is exclusively focused on supporting, funding, coordinating and developing research initiatives, and promotingother efforts that our university undertakes as part of its goal to become aresearch center with international standards. Our students are encouraged to do original research from the beginning oftheir careers. In that line, they can enroll in research classes since their firstyear in General Studies, as well as along their career as undergraduate orgraduate students. To achieve this purpose, we hold a series of resourcesthat target the development of new knowledge, such as 47 laboratories,17 research centers, and 83 research groups and networks. We also have8 libraries, newspaper archives and documentation centers, where 33online databases are also available.Furthermore, the PUCP has put great efforts to motivate the membersof our community in developing new knowledge, encouraging andrewarding research projects through different awards, calls, tenders, funds, scholarships and other funding programs. Among the differentresearch-funding programs, we have the Funding Program for Bachelor’sThesis (PADET), the Funding Program for Graduate Students (PAIP), andthe Funding Program for Emerging Research (PAIN).PUCP invested S/. 4’231,755.08 in the Annual Research Projects Tender2014, as incentive to reach the generation of knowledge. We are certainthat all these elements have set the foundations to make of our institutiona research university. The outstanding results that PUCP has reached indifferent fields of knowledge, as well as our contributions to renownedinternational research centers are proof of that.19
