Lindsay Lohan is the tenacious bratty girl wecan’t help but root for, perhaps because weknow she combines undeniable talent with thetype of cool-chick glamour that graces Hollywood all too intermittently. Even when she wasconvalescing at celeb-friendly rehab centerslike Wonderland and Promises, or joining theranks of starlets who made a habit of goingcommando to the delight of paparazzi packs,we were always more invested in her succeeding than failing. Like her character in MeanGirls, in recent years she had become one of thePlastics; but we suspected she’d eventually growup and get real—and maybe she’s finally getting around to doingjust that.Ascending to the sun-parched rooftop of a decrepit residencyhotel in downtown Los Angeles for our Sunday morning photoshoot celebrating her personal style, Lohan is almost punctual—unheard of in previous days of L-Squared. A self-admitted compulsive shopper who counts Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen,and Stella McCartney among her favorite designers, Lohan comesout of the dressing room in varying looks—from the lady-wholunches emerald Oscar de la Renta dress to the downtown uniformof distressed Ralph Lauren jeans and a T-shirt—without a hint of“am I wearing this right?” on her face. She’s blessed with the intangible gift of transforming whatever she puts on into something unequivocally Lindsay. Remember her Ann-Margret phase, whenshe was playing up her pinup bod in halter dresses? They’re so classic, andthey last forever, and it’d be a really cool thing to have my nameon.” Until then she’ll have to rely on her favorite new bag—a birthday gift from her.friend DJ Samantha Ronson. “It’s a Chanel bag,and it’s got pearls on it and chains,” says Lohan. “It’s really cool.”She and Sam (sister of fashion designer Charlotte Ronson andmusic producer Mark Ronson) have been inseparable formonths —providing the tabloids with kissy photos stoking endlessgossip fires about their relationship.When I ask her to describe her style, Lohan tells me it changesdepending on her mood. I inquire about whether the people shespends time with influence her fashion choices—pointing out thatshe and Samantha recently sported matching fedoras during anight out on the town—and she offers, simply, “I think that was justbecause I had a bad hair day.”As for, you know, her acting career, Lohan’s new indie comedy,Labor Pains, costarring Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Cheryl Hines, is inthe can, and she’ll have a recurring role on this season’s Ugly Betty(styled by Patricia Field, no less). “I still haven’t worked with somedirectors I want to work with,” she says, as if she were an actress inthe twilight of her career, as opposed to the dawn. “I still have somewhere to go, which I think is a good thing, because if I’d done it allby now I’d have nothing else to explore.” She then confesses thatlately she’s “obsessed with working with Martin Scorsese.” Martyand Chanel?
