Chapter 1. IntroductionThank you for purchasing a TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator.Note: This User's Manual is intended for both the CD-D13 1x3 and CD-D17HD1x7 Tower CD Duplicator systems. Operational instructions for both models areessentially the same. The primary difference between models is the number oftarget drives and the inclusion of a hard disk drive. Other minor differencesbetween the models are described herein as necessary.The TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator is a stand-alone disc-to-disc CD Duplicatorsystem that does not require connection to a computer. It can duplicate a singlemaster CD to CD-R media at up to 52X speeds, resulting in an exact replica of a700MB disc. It can also duplicate discs to CD-RW media at up to 32X speeds.The TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator is designed to perform CD copying quicklyand accurately. The CD Duplicator automatically identifies source CD formatsand replicates the content as required.The TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator performs continuous copying with nowaiting. It is an ideal CD duplicator for the advanced user who requires speed andaccuracy.You can set up your TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator very quickly and easily.There is no need to install any software. There is no need to attach any cables toyour computer. The TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator functions entirely as astand-alone unit.Caution: Your TASCAM Tower CD Duplicator can operate on either 115VACor 220VAC voltage. Before you turn on the power to the unit, be certain to selectthe correct voltage for your region by setting the AC Voltage Selector on the rearpanel. Front PanelLCD control panel: Use the control panel buttons to navigate through thevarious functions viewed on the LCD display.Figure 3. SetupChapter 2. Using the CD DuplicatorThis chapter explains how to set up the CD Duplicator, as well as basic operationand menu functions.Note: The following instructions are applicable to 1x3 and 1x7 Tower CDDuplicators. The primary difference between models is the number of targetdrives and the inclusion of a hard disk drive. Please refer to “Specifications” onpage 28 for detailed information on your model.Setup1.Carefully remove the CD Duplicator unit, AC power cord and user’smanual from the shipping box.Note: Please keep the original box and packaging materials for use in theevent of future storage or transportation of the unit.2.Connect one end of the included power cable to the back of the CDDuplicator. Connect the other end of the power cable to a three-prongreceptacle AC outlet.Caution: Do not attempt to bypass the grounding plug. Otherwise, you riskdamage to the unit and electrical shock.3.Turn on the power to the CD Duplicator by pressing the power buttonon the lower right-hand side of the unit.During initialization, the CD Duplicator performs a self-test in which theunit’s internal buffer is tested, source and target drives are detected, and theLCD display is tested. Once the initialization is complete, the CD Duplicatoris ready for use.The LCD initially displays the Copy function by default.Figure 5. Basic OperationBasic OperationThis section explains the basic operation of the CD Duplicator.Copying from the Optical (CD) Source DriveNote: The following instructions apply to all CD Duplicator models.1.Place a source disc in the disc tray of the source drive.2.Switch to function [1 Copy] by pressing the3.Place a blank CD-R disc into as many of the target drives as you desire,then press thebutton (if necessary).(ENT) button to start copying.You do not need to insert a CD-R disc into every available target drive. Youcan make fewer copies if you prefer. The internal controller willautomatically detect inserted discs and issue the record command to onlythose target drives that contain a blank disc.When the copy operation is complete, the CD-R disc in each of the targetdrives will be ejected automatically.Note: With the default setting, after a source disc has been successfully copied, theCD Duplicator automatically ejects the target CD-R discs. With the default setting, if the copy operation fails, the failed target CD-Rdisc remains in the target drive. To remove the failed CD-R disc, press theeject button on the target drive and retrieve the disc. Press the eject buttonagain to retract the disc tray. Loading Data to and Copying from the Hard Disk Source DriveLoading Data to and Copying from the Hard Disk Source DriveNote: The following instructions apply only to the TASCAM CD-D17HD TowerCD Duplicator.During initialization (see Step 3 on page 7), the CD Duplicator performs a selftest to detect source drives. The CD-ROM drive and hard disk drive will bedetected as available source drives. The CD-ROM drive is the default sourcedrive.The internal hard disk drive was formatted and partitioned at the factory. Eachpartition occupies 1GB of hard disk space. The number of partitions depends onthe capacity of the hard disk drive. Partitions are arranged alphabetically andinitially contain no data. A set of data loaded into a partition on the hard disk driveis called an “image file.”To use the hard disk drive as the source drive, you must first load an image filefrom a CD onto a partition on the hard disk drive, select the partition that containsthe data you want to copy, specify the hard disk drive as the source drive, thenexecute the copy function.1.Insert a source CD into the CD-ROM drive.This disc (CD-ROM, CD-R, or CD-RW) contains the data that you wish tocopy to the partition on the internal hard disk drive.2.Press thethe/buttons to select function menu [9 Image], then press(ENT) button.The Image menu includes the Load, Delete Image, Image Info, CompareImage, Select Image and Select Src Drive functions.3.Press the/buttons to select function [9-5 Select Image], thenpress the(ENT) button to access the Select a Partition submenu.The Select a Partition submenu enables you to select a partition (A, B, C, etc.)into which to load an image file on the hard disk drive. With the default setting, if the copy operation fails, the failed target CD-Rdisc remains in the target drive. To remove the failed CD-R disc, press theeject button on the target drive and retrieve the disc. Then press the ejectbutton again to retract the disc tray. Tower CD Duplicator FunctionsThe Tower CD Duplicator features 12 functions: Copy, Test, Test &Copy, Verify,Compare, Prescan, Disc Info, Select Source, Image, Edit Track, Setup, andAdvanced Setup. Each function is explained below.1 CopyThe Copy function enables you to copy data from a source CD or a partition onthe internal hard disk (if your Tower CD Duplicator features a factory-installedhard disk drive). For more information, refer to “Basic Operation” on page 8.To copy data to one of more CD-R discs, follow the steps below:1.2.Switch to function [1 Copy] by pressing thebutton.Insert a source disc in the source drive and a blank CD-R disc in asmany of the target drives as you desire.(Note: The CD-D17HD Tower CD Duplicator features a factory-installedhard disk drive.
