WILDLIFE CONSERVATION INTERNATIONALIMPACT REPORT2020 - 2021Wildlife Conservation International is the umbrella organisation ofThe Orangutan Project, International Elephant Project and the International Tiger Project

A MESSAGEFROM OUR FOUNDERAs we are now all painfully aware, 2020 was not an anomaly. Human-driven global pandemics, both asymptom and a cause of our depleted planet, are here for the long haul.As I write, our ground partners across Sumatra and Kalimantan are burying their dead. Over the past few monthswe’ve lost friends and colleagues. It is remarkable to me that throughout this ongoing crisis, their dedication toorangutan survival has not missed a beat. Orangutan carers and vets at our funded rescue centres have nowworked back to back shifts for weeks on end, isolating with the orangutans to protect them from COVID-19.Our two new rescue alliances, the Sumatran Rescue Alliance (SRA) and Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance(BORA) have responded swiftly to rising numbers of displaced, stolen and illegally-held orangutans – testamentto their perseverance and the horrific consequences of mass deforestation.Throughout Sumatra and Borneo, our ranger teams have patrolled thousands of kilometres of forest, largely onfoot, throughout the pandemic. Responding to surges in poaching and illegal encroachment, lockdown wasnever an option for them.In Sumatran elephant habitat, special trained rangers were on location 24/7 throughout the year, just tomitigate conflict between subsistence farmers and the very last herds. For Critically Endangered Sumatrantigers, elephants and orangutans, these determined efforts are some of the very last safeguards beforeimminent extinction. So, it is with humility and gratitude that we too have persevered, providing our partners with the sustainedresources to undertake these vital actions, and to work with us to legally secure these last lowland ecosystems. My sincere thanks to every supporter who has contributed to this shared work over an extremely difficult year. Our work continues against a backdrop of mass deforestation, relentless corporate greed and now, theweakening of nature protection laws in response to the pandemic. This is happening not just in Indonesia, butacross the world. Added to this, our work is complex – behind every acre patrolled, every concession restored, every orangutan protected, is hours of painstaking work. Our silver lining is that every one of our wins have a remarkable impact. Saving Indonesia’s lowland rainforestsis more effective for the mitigation of climate change than removing all of the world’s transport systemscombined. It’s not without irony that this work is being undertaken by some of our world’s poorest communities, for the benefit of us all.Our partners’ perseverance, and your continued generosity is my reason for hope. Together, we have establisheda unique, holistic approach, and as you’ll read over the following pages, it is an approach that is working.Thank you for making it possible.Yours,Leif CocksWildlife Conservation International2WILDLIFE CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL IMPACT REPORT 2020-21VISIONALL ORANGUTANS WILLLIVE IN THEIR NATURALHABITAT IN SECURE ANDVIABLE POPULATIONS.MISSIONTHE OVERALL MISSIONOF WCI IS TO ENSURETHE SURVIVAL OF ALLORANGUTAN SPECIES,ASIAN ELEPHANTS ANDSUMATRAN TIGERS IN THEIRNATURAL HABITAT ANDPROMOTE THE WELFAREOF ALL INDIVIDUALS.
