If you are unfamiliar with firearms you should seek formal training before using your rifle.WARNING: YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL OF THESE SAFETYRULES TO ENSURE THE SAFE USE OF YOUR FIREARM.THE FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ANDWARNINGS IN THIS MANUAL COULD CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH TO YOU OR OTHERS AND DAMAGETO PROPERTY. As a firearm owner, you accept a demanding responsibility.How serious you take this responsibility can be the differencebetween life and death. There is no excuse for careless or abusive handling of your firearm. At all times handle your firearmwith intense respect for its power and potential danger.3

Never point a firearm at anyone or anything you do notintend to shoot whether or not it is loaded. This is particularlyimportant when loading, unloading, or field stripping the firearm.ALWAYS control the direction of the firearm. ALWAYS TREAT EVERY FIREARM AS IF IT IS LOADED ANDWILL FIRE. Do not take anyone’s word that the firearm isunloaded – always check for yourself. Never pass your firearm toanother person until the cylinder or action is open and you visuallycheck that it is unloaded. Keep your firearm unloaded and safelystored when not in use. NEVER PLACE YOUR FINGER INSIDE THE TRIGGER GUARDOR ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU INTEND TO FIRE. Ensurethat other objects do not touch the trigger. ALWAYS BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYONDIT. Always be sure of where the bullet will strike and shoot onlywhere there is a safe back stop free of obstructions, water or othersurfaces which can cause a ricochet. Be sure your bullet will stopbehind your target. Bullets can glance off many surfaces like rocksor the surface of water and travel in unpredictable directions withconsiderable velocity. Do not fire randomly into the sky. NEVER CROSS OBSTACLES SUCH AS FENCES OR STREAMSWITH A LOADED FIREARM. Always make certain your firearm isunloaded before crossing a fence, climbing a tree, jumping a ditchor negotiating other obstacles. SAFE FIREARM HANDLING IS YOUR PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AT ALL TIMES. Firearms are dangerous and can causeserious injury or death if they are misused or used inappropriately.Safety must be the prime consideration of any one who owns orhandles firearms. Accidents are the result of violating the rules ofsafe firearm handling and common sense. Firearm safety trainingis available. Contact your firearms dealer, law enforcement agency,local sportsman’s club, etc. for availability. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FIREARM AT ALL TIMES. Inowning a firearm, you must undertake full-time responsibility foryour firearm’s safety and security. You must protect yourself andall others against injury or death from misuse of the firearm 24hours a day. FIREARM SECURITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You mustsecure firearms safely from children and/or unauthorized users.Your firearm should always be kept unloaded and locked when notin use. A lock has been provided for this purpose. Never assumethat the use of this lock is sufficient to safely secure your firearm.You must always evaluate your personal situation and employ thesecurity systems that meet your needs and prevent children andunauthorized users from gaining access to your firearm.4

For example - targetshooting, hunting and lawful resistance of deadly criminal force. Itis your responsibility to ensure that you are in compliance with allapplicable laws and ordinances regarding the use of your firearm. NEVER RELY ON MECHANICAL FEATURES ALONE. Only yoursafe firearm-handling habits will ensure the safe use of yourfirearm. This is your responsibility. ALWAYS SAFELY STORE AND SECURE YOUR FIREARM. Safeand secure storage of your firearm is one of your most importantresponsibilities. It is a full-time responsibility. You must alwayssecure your firearm and ammunition separately so that they arenot accessible to children and/or other unauthorized persons. NEVER KEEP AMMUNITION IN THE SAME LOCATION AS THEFIREARM. Store each in a separate and secure place. ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION THAT IS SPECIFIED FORUSE WITH FIREARMS every time you handle your firearm forcleaning and maintenance. ALWAYS WEAR EYE AND HEARING PROTECTION THAT ARESPECIFIED FOR USE WITH FIREARMS every time you dischargeyour firearm. Make sure others in the vicinity of where you will beshooting do so as well. NEVER USE ALCOHOL OR DRUGS BEFORE OR WHILESHOOTING. Do not use your firearm if you are on any medicationwhich impairs, even slightly, your mental or physical ability. ALWAYS HAVE ADEQUATE VENTILATION. Discharging firearmsin poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead and other substances known tocause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious physicalinjury. Review the warnings and labels for all ammunition andcleaning products carefully. Wash hands thoroughly after exposure. BEFORE HANDLING ANY FIREARM, UNDERSTAND ITS OPERATION. Not all firearms are the same. Familiarize yourself with themechanical features of any firearm you intend to use. BEWARE OF BARREL OBSTRUCTIONS Be sure the barrel isclear of obstructions before shooting. Mud, water, snow or otherobjects may inadvertently lodge in the barrel bore. A smallobstruction can cause a dangerous increase in pressure and maydamage your firearm and cause injury to yourself and others. BE SURE ALL ACCESSORIES, SUCH AS HOLSTERS. GRIPS,SLINGS, SCOPES AND OTHER ACCESSORIES ARE COMPATIBLE with the firearm and that the accessories do not interfere withsafe operation. It is your responsibility to understand and follow allof the instructions in this manual,as well as those which may besupplied with your ammunition and any accessory. NEVER DISASSEMBLE YOUR FIREARM beyond the field stripping procedure outlined in this manual. Improper disassembly orreassembly of your firearm may be dangerous and can lead toserious injury or death. Please read and followthe instructions packaged separately for the use of this lock. Alock, when properly used, can be an effective tool in preventing unauthorized access to your firearm. There are other alternative locks and safe storage containers available in the marketplace which may also be appropriate for your particularneeds. Consult your local firearm shop, hardware store, orlocal police department for guidance on the variety of othersafe storage devices or practices which may be appropriatefor your particular needs. By purchasing this firearm you haveaccepted the responsibility of safely securing the firearm at alltimes and preventing its unauthorized use. Never assume thatthe use of this lock alone is sufficient to safely secure yourfirearm. Safe and secure storage of your firearmand ammunition are your responsibility. It is a full-time responsibility. NEVER ASSUME THAT A “HIDING” PLACE IS A SECURESTORAGE METHOD. Others may be aware of your storagelocation or come upon it by chance. It is your personalresponsibility to use common sense when storing your firearmand ammunition and to always make sure they are not accessible to children or other unauthorized persons. NEVER TRANSPORT A LOADED FIREARM. When transporting your firearm, be sure it is unloaded and locked. Safe andsecure transportation of your firearm is your responsibility. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LAW! Many jurisdictions have lawsthat make it a crime to keep a firearm unlocked and in an areaaccessible to children or others. Keeping a firearm locked andunloaded when not in use is not only common sense safetypractice. IT IS THE LAW. You must be familiar with all local,state, and federal laws regarding the safe storage and transportation of your firearm. Failure to know and follow the lawmay result in unauthorized access or use of your firearm byanother. Obey all laws relating to the storage and transportation of firearms. A firearm and ammunition are a system and must work together. There are different types of ammunition for different typesof firearms. Your firearm has been designed for ammunition ofa specific type and a specific gauge or caliber. It is importantto select the proper ammunition for your firearm. Different combinations of bullet velocity, bullet weight andfirearm weight can have major impact on felt recoil; high feltrecoil can be uncomfortable to some shooters.WARNING: NEVER USE AMMUNITION OF THE INCORRECT GAUGE OR CALIBER. USING AMMUNITION OFTHE INCORRECT GAUGE OR CALIBER MAY CAUSEDAMAGE TO YOUR FIREARM AND POSSIBLE SERIOUS INJURYTO YOU AND TO OTHERS.WARNING: NEVER USE CARTRIDGES OTHER THANTHOSE DESIGNATED BY THE MARKING ON THEFIREARM. M&P15 CF Rifle Manual 080118 3005747.Qxp M&P CF Rifle Manual 8/9/18 1:AMMUNITION CONTINUEDCAUTION: Use of ammunition manufactured with corrosiveprimers in this firearm will cause oxidation to develop on anyexposed metal parts of the firearm. To prevent such oxidation,the residue from corrosive primers must be completely removedfrom all exposed metal parts after each time ammunition withcorrosive primers is used in this firearm. Conventional oil or solvent-based firearm cleaners WILL NOT dissolve the residue fromcorrosive primers. Residue from corrosive primers MUST becompletely dissolved with a water-based cleaner. After the corrosive residue has been completely dissolved from all exposedmetal parts, remove any excess water-based cleaner from thefirearm. Finally, lubricate the firearm as instructed in the Safetyand Instruction Manual. Failure to follow these instructions willcause damage to the firearm and may affect the ability of thefirearm to function properly. Check with the ammunition manufacturer or a qualified gunsmith if you are unsure whether the particular ammunition youplan to use in this firearm has been manufactured with corrosive primers. If in doubt, follow all the instructions above toprevent oxidation caused by ammunition manufactured withcorrosive primers. When you inspect your rifle, you shouldfirst check for yourself to ensure that it isunloaded. To do this, grasp the rifle withyour finger off the trigger and outside thetrigger guard, point the muzzle in a safedirection, depress the magazine releaseand remove the magazine (FIGURE 7).FIGURE 7NOTE: See page 40 for instructions on howto detach the magazine from the BulletButton variant of the Smith & WessonM&P15 centerfire rifle. Place safety selector lever on “SAFE”(FIGURE 8). If the safety lever won’trotate to the “SAFE” position - pull thecharging handle (uniformly by both sides)all the way back (FIGURE 9), press andhold the lower portion of the bolt catchdown (FIGURE 10) while you releasepressure on the charging handle. This willlock the bolt in the open position. Returncharging handle fully forward until it locksand remove finger from bolt catch. Look into the receiver and check chamber to be sure no cartridges are visible(FIGURE 11).FIGURE 8FIGURE 9 You must follow this procedure everytime a firearm leaves your hand, iscleaned, handed to you or another person, transported or stored. While your magazine may be able to be inserted into another model firearm, itwill only function properly in the specific model for which itwas designed. Do not interchange magazines from one modelfirearm to another model firearm. Follow instructions in this manual and any other specificinstructions which may be marked onto, or accompany, amagazine. Failure to use the particular type of Smith &Wesson magazine specified for your model and caliber offirearm may result in a malfunction. With the bullet end of the cartridgepointing forward, insert the loadedmagazine into magazine well untilit is securely locked in (FIGURE19). Check placement by puttingdownward pressure on magazine.FIGURE 19WARNINGS: THIS FIREARM MAY DISCHARGE ACCIDENTALLY WHEN A ROUND IS FED INTO THE CHAMBER, IF IT IS DROPPED OR RECEIVES A BLOW TOTHE MUZZLE OR FRONT OF THE FIREARM. Press in on the top of the thumbpiece of the bolt catch to release the bolt and carrier, whichwill move forward and feed a round from the magazine into thechamber. The firearm is now loaded and will fire if the safetyselector lever is set on “FIRE” and the trigger is pulled. If the bolt does not completelyclose, press the bolt assist(FIGURE 20).
