Customer SatisfactionBBB AUTO LINE’s purpose is toresolve disputes between vehiclemanufacturers and their customers.BBB AUTO LINE’s decision makersare impartial third parties who willlisten to both the customer and themanufacturer and decide what can bedone to resolve the disagreement.The BBB AUTO LINE’s decision isnot binding on you unless you agree toaccept it. If you accept the decision,Honda will abide by it. Generally,disputes submitted to BBB AUTOLINE are resolved within 40 days (47days if you have not first contactedHonda about your complaint).Honda offers you the opportunity tomediate and arbitrate a disagreementthrough BBB AUTO LINE because wewant you to feel that you have beentreated fairly.Eligibility is limited by your vehicle’sage, mileage, and other factors. In orderto file a claim, you need to provide yourname and address, the VehicleIdentification Number of your vehicle,and a brief statement outlining thedisagreement. Initially, BBB may try toresolve the disagreement throughmediation. If this is not successful, yourcomplaint will be reviewed by animpartial, volunteer arbitrator. You maypresent the facts of your case to thearbitrator at an informal meeting.We encourage you to use this programbefore, or instead of, going to court. Itis informal, free of charge to you, andgenerally resolves problems muchfaster than the court system. Lawyersare usually not involved in theresolution of claims through the BBB,although you may obtain one at yourown expense if you choose.If you want to go to court, we do notrequire you to first file a claim withBBB AUTO LINE. General Warranty ProvisionsThe warranty coverages in this bookletare offered only to the owner of a 1996Honda automobile. To be covered, thevehicle must be distributed by AmericanHonda through the Honda AutomobileDivision, and sold by a Hondaautomobile dealer in the United States,Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.NOTE: American Honda does notdistribute the 1996 Passport SportUtility Vehicle in Puerto Rico or the U.S.Virgin Islands. Therefore, these warrantycoverages do not apply to any 1996Passport that is registered or normallydriven in those areas.Parts replaced under any of thewarranties in this booklet become theproperty of Honda. Honda will make thefinal decision whether to repair anyexisting part or assembly or replace it.Honda may use factoryremanufactured parts rather than newparts for some warranty repairs. Thoseparts, like new parts, are covered for theremainder of the New Car LimitedWarranty (see page 13). Any installed part or accessory thatfails because it was not designed to fitthat year and model of Honda.The warranties in this booklet do notcover: Any vehicle while it is registered ornormally driven outside the UnitedStates, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. VirginIslands. The failure of any part or accessorydue to:– Abuse, misuse, accidental damage,or acts of God.– Improper installation ormaintenance.– A low fluid level or the use of afluid other than specified byHonda.– The installation of any part that isnot equal to the original in qualityof materials or workmanship.– Use of the vehicle in competition orracing events.12 Your Warranties in Detail Any vehicle with an odometer thathas been altered so it is impossible todetermine the actual mileage. Any failure caused by modifying thevehicle, or installing accessories notauthorized by Honda. Any incidental expenses orinconvenience you may suffer due tothe loss of use of your vehicle.

New Car Limited WarrantyTime and Mileage PeriodThis Warranty Does Not Cover:This warranty begins on the date thevehicle is put into use in one of thefollowing ways: Emissions control systems,Accessories, Battery, or Tires. (Theyhave their own warranties.) The vehicle is delivered to the firstpurchaser by a Honda dealer. Normal wear or deterioration ofany part. The vehicle is leased. Cleaning and polishing. The vehicle is used as a demonstratoror company vehicle. The adding of any fluids, unlessthey are needed as part of awarranty repair.Your vehicle is covered for 3 years or36,000 miles, whichever comes first. Air conditioner refrigerant chargeafter the first year, unless required aspart of a warranty repair.Warranty Coverage Broken, chipped, or scratchedwindow glass unless it is due toa defect in material or workmanship.Honda will repair or replace any part thatis defective in material or workmanshipunder normal use. See Proper Operationon page 40. All repairs/replacements madeunder this warranty are free of charge.The replaced or repaired parts are coveredonly until this New Car Warranty expires. Any item concerning your vehicle’sgeneral appearance that is not due to adefect in material or workmanship. The replacement of expendablemaintenance items (such as sparkplugs, filters, wiper blades, or brakepads/linings) unless they are defectivein material or workmanship. Federal Emissions WarrantiesYour Warranty Rightsand ObligationsThe Emissions-related Defects andEmissions Performance warranties are inaddition to the Honda New Car LimitedWarranty. These warranties are givenonly to the owner of a 1996 Hondadistributed by American Honda throughthe Honda Automobile Division, andsold by an authorized Honda dealer inthe fifty United States, the District ofColumbia, the Commonwealth of PuertoRico, the Virgin Islands, Guam,American Samoa, and theCommonwealth of the Northern MarianaIslands.If an authorized Honda automobiledealer cannot repair your car or honoryour claim within a reasonable period oftime, contact the Honda CustomerRelations Zone Office for assistance (seeinside front cover), or you may write to:14 Your Warranties in DetailDirector, Field Operations andSupport Division (6406J)Environmental Protection Agency401 M Street S.W.Washington, D.C. 20460(Attention: Warranty Claim)Your ResponsibilitiesTo qualify for coverage by the Defectsand Performance warranties, you shouldoperate and maintain your 1996 Hondaaccording to the requirements onpage 40 of this warranty booklet, and theMaintenance Schedule in the Owner’sManual. This schedule is designed tokeep your car’s emissions controlsystems functioning properly bymaintaining your car in peak operatingcondition.Honda will not deny a claim foremissions warranty coverage simplybecause you did not maintain thevehicle, or do not have maintenancerecords to show that you did. However,any part that fails because of abuse orlack of maintenance will not be coveredby this warranty.Honda recommends that only partssupplied by Honda or equivalent partsbe used to repair your car. Maintenance,replacement, or repair of emissionscontrol devices and systems may bedone by any automotive repairestablishment or individual.Under normal circumstances, Honda willpay for warranty repairs only when they areperformed at an authorized Honda repairfacility. However, in an emergencysituation the repair of emissions controldevices or systems may be done by anyautomotive repair establishment or individual,or by the owner, using any replacementpart. An emergency situation is consideredto exist if an authorized Honda repairfacility or warranted part is not reasonablyavailable to correct a problem.

Federal Emissions WarrantiesHonda will reimburse you for thoseemergency repairs that are covered by theEmissions Warranties. Partsreimbursement is at the manufacturer’ssuggested retail price, and laborreimbursement is at ageographically-appropriate hourly laborrate for Honda’s recommended timeallowance. For reimbursement, presentthe replaced parts and a copy of the paidreceipt to any authorized Hondaautomobile dealer.The use of replacement parts notequivalent to the original parts mayimpair the effectiveness of your car’semissions control systems. If anon-equivalent replacement part is usedin the maintenance or repair of your car,and if an authorized Honda automobiledealer determines it is defective orcauses a failure of a warranted part, yourclaim for repair to bring your car intocompliance with applicable standardsmay be denied. If the part in question isnot related to the reason your car fails tomeet the standards, your claim will notbe denied.These Warranties Do Not Cover: Failures or malfunctions of theemissions control systems caused byabuse, alteration, accident, misuse, orthe use of leaded gasoline. Replacement of maintenance itemssuch as, but not limited to, sparkplugs, filters, hoses, belts, coolant orlubricants beyond their first requiredmaintenance point. Federal Emissions WarrantiesEmissions-related Defects WarrantyWarranty CoverageTime and Mileage PeriodHonda warrants that your automobile:This warranty begins on the date the car isdelivered to the first purchaser other thanan authorized Honda dealer, or the date itis first used as a demonstrator, lease, orcompany car, whichever comes first, andcontinues for 3 years or 36,000 miles,whichever comes first.1. is designed, built and equipped toconform at the time of sale with allapplicable emissions standards.and2. is free from defects in materials andworkmanship that would cause it tofail to conform with applicableemissions requirements during thespecified time and mileage period.A list of the parts covered by this warrantyis on pages 18-20. Several parts in theemissions control systems are covered for 8years or 80,000 miles, whichever comesfirst. Those parts are identified by 8/80 onpages 18-20.16 Your Warranties in DetailTo Get EmissionsWarranty ServiceRepairs covered by this warranty will beperformed at no charge for parts, labor,and diagnosis.An authorized Honda dealer is required,within 30 days of the time you take yourcar to the dealer for emissions warrantyservice, to either honor your claim foradjustment, repair, or replacement, ornotify you in writing that your claim isbeing denied, and explain why.If this time limit is not met, anauthorized Honda dealer will performthe required repairs free of charge.The only exceptions allowed are whenyou, the owner, request or agree to adelay, or the delay is caused bycircumstances beyond the control ofHonda or the dealer.If an authorized Honda automobiledealer is not able to repair your carwithin 30 days from the time you take itto the dealer, you may have your carrepaired at any repair facility youchoose. The only exceptions allowed arewhen you, the owner, request or agree toa delay, or the delay is caused bycircumstances beyond the control of Hondaor the dealer.

Federal Emissions WarrantiesEmissions Performance WarrantyIf you choose a repair facility that is notan authorized Honda dealer, Honda willreimburse you for the repair. Partsreimbursement is at the manufacturer’ssuggested retail price, and laborreimbursement is at a geographicallyappropriate hourly rate for Honda’srecommended time allowance.
