Classsize is limited, so don’t delay! 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time As you perhaps know, I studiedCanon Law from 2016 2019 at TheCatholic University of America inWashington, DC. In the spring of2019, I was eating lunch in the buildingwhere I lived with a priest from theArchdiocese of Milwaukee. We wereboth late for lunch that day and wewere the only two in the dining room. It seemed likean ordinary lunch, albeit for the fact that we were theonly two in the dining room, the other 30 priests havingalready eaten. Then, out of the blue, my cell phonerang. The caller ID said: “Diocese of La Crosse”²Iknew I had to take the call so I excused myself, leavingthe priest alone with his food, while I went out in thehallway and into an empty conference room. It wasBishop Callahan on the line and he told me that I wasbeing assigned as administrator of Sacred Heart Parishin Polonia and St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Parishin Custer: my first pastorate! He then told me that I would start on Tuesday,July 2nd. “That’s not possible, Bishop,” I replied, “I amnot done with school until the beginning of August.” Hestated that they would figure it out and that I shouldget to the parish and later finish my schooling. I walkedback to the dining room a bit shaken up by the phonecall. The priest from Milwaukee, suspecting it was animportant call, asked who it was. “The bishop,” I said,“and he gave me my new assignment.” Bishop Callahanhad been the auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee so thispriest knew him well. After the phone call, I realized how much I had to dobefore I could get to my new parishes: I had to finishthe classes and take exams for the semester I was in,I had to take one class during the summer, I had tofinish writing my 50 page long research paper (thesis),and prepare for comprehensive exams, the canon lawequivalent of the bar exam for civil attorneys. Not tomention I had to pack up from Washington and moveback to Wisconsin. It was a stressful few months.Nonetheless, I did finish everything and moved backto Wisconsin at the beginning of August 2019. I arrived in the parish and began my assignment onMonday, August 12th. Just a few days later, on Sunday,August 18th, my first Sunday in the parish, Poloniahad its summer picnic. If you’ve ever been over toPolonia for their parish picnic, it’s huge. Nothing likegetting thrown in the deep end through a baptism byfire like the parish picnic at Sacred Heart in Polonia. Then, the next weekend, August 25th, was St. Mary’sin Custer’s parish picnic. What a time to begin ministryin my first pastorate! I’ll never forget it. Here at OurLady Queen of Heaven, we have come to the weekendof our parish picnic. It’s certainly less stressful for methan my first pastorate. I look forward to seeing manyof you outside for it. I’m so happy to be here and toenjoy the picnic. The deep end doesn’t seem nearlyas deep as it did in 2019. God bless! ²Father Guanella
