COMMODORE’S COMMENTSVince Watkins, CommodoreI start my term as Commodore both humbled and challenged. Humbled because I know it is thecountless hours of volunteer service that make for a successful term. For example it takes over70 volunteers to run the Poker Run and Peninsula Cup. That doesn’t count the many countlesshundreds of hours and effort that the Fleet Committee members, other volunteers and PYC staffwill spend on making sure all the yachting events serve the needs and wants of our membership.THE SAILING SCENESTEVE HOSLER, SAIL FLEET CAPTAINWelcome to the 2020 Sailing Season at PYC!2020 promises to be our most exciting sailing year ever at PYC and we are incredibly fortunate tohave assembled an outstanding team of Sail Fleet Officers to lead our 2020 sailing programs.More formal introductions of the 2020 Sail Fleet Officers will be made at the Commodore’s Ball which will be heldon Saturday, January 11:Sail Fleet Captain - Tim HarbickSail Fleet Commander & Regatta Chair - Greg PolekSail Fleet Ensign, Race Committee - Dave KrippeneSail Fleet Ensign, Junior Sailing - Deb AgostinelliThe 2020 Sail Fleet Team is tremendously enthusiastic about the upcoming year! Please be sure to mark your calendars for some exciting early 2020 events . . .LNYC Ice Bucket Regatta – Wednesday, January 1 atLNYC. First racing opportunity of 2020. This one-dayregatta is open to all boats with either a LNKC PHRFcertificate or a Portsmouth rating. Check the LNYCwebsite for details at www.lakenormanyc.org.LNKC Icicle Series – Saturdays, January 11, January18, and February 1 with a make-up date February 8, ifnecessary. Awards will be presented Saturday, February15. Icicle Series is hosted this year by LNYC. The IcicleSeries is a lake wide event exclusively for members ofPYC, OYC, and LNYC. For more details check the LNYCwebsite at www.lakenormanyc.org.PYC J/88 Winter Racing Series – The PYC Fleet Committee is very excited to announce it will be sponsoring theinaugural J/88 Winter Racing Series on Lake Norman. Tentative dates are January 18-19, February 22-23, March21-22. More details to follow.Whatever your level of sailing interest, skill, or experience PYC and the PYC Sail Fleet Team stand ready to helpfulfill your aspirations.2020 promises to be a tremendous year for sailing at PYC! Fair Winds!8 PeninsulaYacht.comThe challenge is due to the incredibly high bar that outgoing Commodore John Camp set by the Committee’sachievements in 2019. Records were set for money raised by the Poker Run and Pen Cup. The Poker Run charityauction raised 21,000 that was given equally to the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center and the LevineDickson Hospice House. The Raft Ups and sailing regattas had participation that exceeded any other year.Looking forward to 2020 the Fleet Committee has already formulated plans to expand the experiences offered bythe Poker Run weekend. Also, we are developing ways to enhance the interaction between our event sponsors andmembership. The Sail Fleet is working on ways toimprove participation in the myriad of lake widesailing events. A third charity, the Calvin NewmanYouth Boating Safety Foundation, will be addedto the Charity Auction organizations.2020FLEET COMMITTEEMost of all I aspire that all of you and your familieswill have a fun and eventful year in 2020. We area Yacht Club and first and foremost, by the serviceof the Fleet Committee, that should be abundantlyevident to you as members.
