Lesson Plan #1 – Team Handball Gr.8Title: Moving with the ballSubject: Physical Education and Health – Team HandballTime Duration: 75 minutesObjective: Students will learn to dribble, move with our without the ball, stopping,changing directions. Lesson focuses on basic motor skills of running, jumping andthrowingMaterials: handballs, goals, pinniesActivities and Procedures:Introduction (15 minutes): introduction of the unit; video presentation about handballWarm up activity (10-15 minutes):Touch the opponentTwo teams of equal numbers scatter around the gym Team with the ball starts and triesto touch an opponent with the ball. Skill games‘Dribbling duel’One player is dribbling. The other one tries to get the ball. How many times the defenderis successful in one minute?Tricky dribblingPlayers dribble/bounce the ball in various body positions (sitting, kneeling, etc.)Players dribble/bounce with one hand and jump up and down on the opposite legPlayers dribble the ball through/under obstaclesPlayers dribble/bounce two balls in sync.Line tagPlayers dribble their ball around the gym but only allowed to walk/run on the lines. Whenmeet a team-mate both player need to make a half turn.

Freed by a bounceEvery player moves around the gym by dribbling a ball. 3-4 players (without a ball) try totouch every dribbling player. If a player gets touched he/she stands in a straddleposition. Another player who has to bounce the ball through the legs can free him upfrom this position. Can the tag players freeze every player?Ball thiefTwo players stand in front of each other, in between them there is a handball on thefloor. Both of them have to try to pick up the ball and dribble it behind the goal line (or adesignated area) without being touched by the partner.2. Game playHit the benchesTeam A is on one side of the field. Team B are the defenders. A passes to get a goodchance for throwing at the benches. They must stay behind a certain line. If a tiger catches the ball he/she changes place with the player.Variations: increase the number of tigers in the circle.Conveyor BeltEach team must try to transport the balls from A to B as quickly as possible, by passingthe ball from player to player.Zig-zag passingSame game as Conveyor belt. They shot at theopponent’s goal. Which team can score the most goal in 10 minutes?

Target shootingPlayers stand around the 6m line, facing the goal. At the teacher’s mark they all shootfor goal and try to hit the corners, cones or mats.Target shooting 2Team A tries to get to the benches at the end of the court by dribbling the ball andwithout being touched by an opponent. Once they reach the bench they need to hit oneof the cones. Every hit is 1 point. Those players who got touched must go back to thestart line and start again. Which team can reach the most point in 3 minutes.2. Game playKeep AwayTwo teams of equal numbers, from twomembers upward, scattered throughout thedesignated area. The members of one team tryto keep the ball from the members of the otherteam through passing, dribbling and movingabout as per the basic rules of handball. The ballis awarded the opponents if a team memberholds the ball more than three seconds, takesmore than three steps or allows the ball togo out of the designated area.The Queens BallDivide the court as on picture. Eachteam begins the game on their ownhalf and try to pass the ball over tothe Queen who must try to catch it. Ifit is successful then one member ofthe team is allowed to take upposition in the opponents half and theball maybe passed to her. The teamwhich has eventually all it’s players inthe opposing half is the winner.Conclusions (10 minutes):1. What have we learned? What are the most important things we need to pay attentionto when shooting and aiming for a target?

Lesson Plan #4 – Team Handball Gr.8Title: Body fakeSubject: Physical Education and Health – Team HandballTime Duration: 75 minutesObjective: Students will learn how to ‘trick’ the opponent by body fake and shootingfake.Materials: handballs, goals, pinniesActivities and Procedures:Warm up activity (10-15 minutes):Catch in pairsA pair tries to catch the other players in the gym. When they catch someone they form agroup of three. On reaching a fourth person they than split into two pairs etc.Main activity (40 minutes):1. Skill gamesTouch the conePlayer A tries to touch the cone that is protected by player B. Change roles after 5 touch.Fish and NetThe players of team A try to slip trough team B's net. The players of teamB join hands add are only allowed to move sideways.

Hen and Hawk5-6 players stand behind the ‘hen’ holding on to each other’s waist. The‘hawk’ tries to catch the hen at the back.Tiger BallMaximum 7 players form a circle. 3 players inside the circle are the tigers and try toblock the passes. If a tiger catches the ball he/she changes place with the player.Variations: increase the number of tigers in the circle;ball can be passed only to the second person in the circleplay the game without forming a circleThe Queens BallDivide the court as on picture. Movements ofdefense players and the roles of individual and team defense.Materials: handballs, goals, pinnies, white board to demonstrate in drawing the simpledefense systemActivities and Procedures:Warm up activity (10-15 minutes):Touch the opponentTwo teams of equal numbers scatter around the gym Team with the ball starts and triesto touch an opponent with the ball. If the opponent gets touched by the ball the wholeteam does 5 push ups and they start the game.Variations: Extra balls (maximum 3) can be added to make the game more challenging.Main activity (40 minutes):1. Techniquedemonstrate basic body position of defense; how defense blocks an offense players.2. Skill gamesMirror workPlayers in pair move around the gym. A tries to imitate B’s moves than change roles.Sideward tagTag man tries to tag others. Everybody moves sideward.Circle tagPlayer A tries to tag player B. Player A may go through the circle, the tag man is beingblocked by the blue players of the circle. Change after 45 seconds of running.

Relay with blockingRun around the cone and come back. Two players at the cone will try to block therunning players. Which group finished first?Interval handball4 Teams one behind each bench. 2 teams play each other diagonally across the hall.Team scores when they hit the bench. When one team hits the bench, both must rushback to their bases leaving the ball, the other teams then run out pick up the ball andstart to play.Variations: By changing the bench for a chair, the target can be made harder to hit, thusdeveloping skill and accuracy.Conclusions (10 minutes):1. What have we learned? What is the role of an individual defender? How does defencework together?

A simple fastbreak will be introduced.Materials: handballs, goals, pinniesActivities and Procedures:Warm up activity (10-15 minutes):Touch the opponentTwo teams of equal numbers scatter around the gym Team with the ball starts and triesto touch an opponent with the ball. If the opponent gets touched by the ball the wholeteam does 5 push ups and they start the game.Variations: Extra balls (maximum 3) can be added to make the game more challenging.Main activity (40 minutes):1. Skill gamesMoving with the ball4 to 6 players are placed at regular intervals around thegym. The other players then have to run the outsidepassing and receiving the ball as they go.Shield ballThe aim of the players on the edge of the circleis to hit the shield. The player holding the shieldtries to prevent this. Add another ball ifnecessary.

Fast breakPlayers in each group pass the ball to thegoalkeeper and start running up the court. Thegoalkeeper passes the ball back to them as theyare running; they collect the ball and dribble upcourt to shoot at goal.Hit the benchesTeam A is on one side of the field. Team B are thedefenders. A passes to get a good chance for throwing atthe benches. They must stay behind a certain line.
