National Service in ColoradoMEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS IN COLORADOMore than 12,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are helping tomeet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civicengagement through national service in Colorado. Serving at morethan 1,200 locations throughout the state, these citizens tutor andmentor children, support veterans and military families, provide healthservices, restore the environment, respond to disasters, increaseeconomic opportunity, and recruit and manage volunteers. This year, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS)will commit more than 31,790,000 to support Colorado communitiesthrough national service initiatives. CNCS invests in cost-effectivecommunity solutions--working hand in hand with local partners toimprove lives, expand economic opportunity, and engage citizens insolving problems in their communities. Serving in many of the state'smost impoverished communities, CNCS provides vital support toschools, food banks, homeless shelters, community health clinics, youth centers, veterans service facilities, and other nonprofit andfaith-based organizations at a time of growing demand for services.Through a unique public-private partnership, this federal investmentwill leverage an additional 8,810,000 in other resources tostrengthen community impact, build local support, and increase returnon taxpayer dollars.AmeriCorps: This year AmeriCorps will provide more than 5,400individuals the opportunity to provide intensive, results-driven serviceto meet education, environmental, health, economic, and otherpressing needs in communities across Colorado. Most AmeriCorpsgrant funding goes to the Serve Colorado Governor's Commission onCommunity Service, which in turn awards grants to nonprofit groups torespond to local needs. Most of the remainder of the grant funding isdistributed by CNCS directly to multi-state and national organizationsthrough a competitive grants process. Other individuals serve throughAmeriCorps VISTA, whose members help bring individuals andcommunities out of poverty by serving full-time to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, and increase housingopportunities, and AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian CommunityCorps), a 10-month, full time residential program for men and womenbetween the ages of 18 and 24. In exchange for their service,AmeriCorps members earn an education award that can be used topay for college or to pay back qualified student loans. Since 1994,more than 27,000 Colorado residents have served more than 23million hours and have qualified for Segal AmeriCorps EducationAwards totaling more than 53,990,000.Senior Corps: More than 6,900 seniors in Coloradocontribute their time and talents in one of three Senior Corpsprograms. Foster Grandparents serve one-on-one as tutors andmentors to more than 7,800 young people who have specialneeds. Senior Companions help more than 1,800 homeboundseniors and other adults maintain independence in their ownhomes. RSVP volunteers conduct safety patrols, renovate homes, protect the environment, tutor and mentor youth, respond tonatural disasters, and provide other services through more than740 groups across Colorado.Social Innovation Fund: The Social Innovation Fund transformslives and communities using limited federal investment as acatalyst to grow the impact of nonprofits with evidence of strongresults. It harnesses the expertise of grantmaking intermediariesto identify, evaluate and expand effective nonprofits andengages funding partners to contribute nearly three dollars toevery one federal dollar invested. As the Social Innovation Fundnetwork grows programs that work in Colorado, more people areable to overcome their most pressing challenges in the areas ofeconomic opportunity, health, and youth development.
