The airport is namedafter former United States Senator and native NevadanPat McCarran (1876–1954).The airport is the largest operating base for Allegiant Airand Southwest Airlines. In February 2012, McCarranalso became a crew and maintenance base for SpiritAirlines.McCarran is ranked the 26th busiestairport in the world by passenger traffic,with 47.4 million passengers transitingthrough the airport in 2016.
